MME
Quantel’s new MME (Multiple Media Engine) technology provides a major boost to workflow and productivity. MME adds a second media engine to eQ which can be assigned to foreground rendering to provide a 100% boost, or used for in background mode for intelligent autorendering.

Workspace

eQ Workspace is resolution co-existent and can simultaneously store material with different resolutions, frame rates, bit depths and colourspaces. Workspace options start at 160 minutes HD (1920 x 1080 24 fps 10 bit 4:2:2) / 400 minutes’ SD (625/50) and go up to around 18 hours of HD or 12 hours of HD-RGB.

Fader Panel

The audio fader panel provides sophisticated on-the-fly audio mixing control. 8 motorised faders can learn and replay level changes in real time making it straightforward to achieve complex audio mixes. 8 high precision rotary controls allow manual control over pan and the 8 indicator buttons provide instant visual feedback of mode and also double as mute/solo selection. Beautifully integrated into eQ’s timeline editor the audio fader panel is a must if you need to finish audio quickly

QEffects

QEffects is a software application that extends the compositing toolset of eQ out of the suite and onto the desktop. QEffects shares a common user interface, toolset and project format with eQ that both encourages and simplifies teamworking on projects.

QEffects is an assist station to eQ. Jobs that would tie up the main suite such as rotoscoping, matte painting or preparing a complex garbage matte can be handed over to QEffects to boost overall productivity. Titles can be prepared away from the suite and exported with every paramter live and ready for further refinement in eQ on-line. Manual restoration is another great application for QEffects – its next generation Paintbox makes short work of dust and scratches or any defect that has escaped an automated restoration process. QEffects has the complete effects toolset of eQ so it can also be used for storyboarding, effects planning and pre-visualisation applications.

eQ Features and Benefits

Resolution co-existent, multilayer timeline editor
eQ boasts the world’s first resolution co-existent multilayer timeline, making totally flexible finishing a reality for every post application from promos to lonform. Clips of different resolutions can be edited on the
same or different layers without restriction and without rendering. Time is saved as you can instantly work with any format; quality is maximized as no unnecessary conversions are ever performed and disk space is saved as only one copy of each clip need be stored. Fast and simple to use, the timeline editor is jam-packed with features – all available through the systems’ array of one-touch, easily accessed editing functionality.

Off-line integration
The multilayer timeline allows off-line projects to be conformed with exactly the same structure as in the off-line. This includes automatic rebuild of transitions, DVE effects, layer opacity and text, using the open and non-proprietary AAF format compatible with both Apple and Avid editors.

Interactive access
The whole editing toolset is just a gesture away, not hidden under layers of set-up menus. Better still, editors can use the interface they feel most at home with, as many of the functions can be accessed from any of the pen/tablet, keyboard, jog/shuttle or hand unit interfaces.

Freeform desk
eQ’s freeform desk means every editor can work just the way they like, with many sources open at the same time or in the common player/recorder mode. Support for three-point editing, complex trims, matchframe and edit from library deliver total editing control.

Multi-view compositor
The multi-view compositor give artists many ways of interacting with a composite. The timeline or ‘blender’ view will be instantly familiar to Editbox and Henry operators and is a great place to start work on an effect. The scene tree view gives unlimited heirarchical control over DVE axis and layers. The process tree view gives new control over the order of processes and allows unlimited processes on a layer. Finally the camera view provides a virtual camera view of the composite in true 3D space and gives full control over animating the camera. See Demo

Versatile operation
The multilayer timeline supports segment, track and clip effects, which gives massive flexibility when adding effects and boosts productivity when re-versioning pieces. Intelligent partial rendering saves time by only rendering changed frames, not the complete job – so the whole job gets done more quickly.

Integrated plug-ins
There are over 1,000 plug-ins from all the top developers available for eQ. Want to apply several plug-ins simultaneously? No problem. With the multi-view compositor, any number of plug-ins can be applied in any sequence at the same time.

Paintbox inside
Every eQ comes with the graphics power of Paintbox as a fully integrated part of their toolset. With the benefit of 25 years’ experience in thousands of installations around the world, the Paintbox toolset is quite simply peerless. Paintbox boasts a massive range of brushes – including the best airbrush in the business, brilliant cut/paste, graphics tools and hundreds of vector fonts. So whether it’s a complex graphic or an instant retouch, the built-in Paintbox has all the graphics tools you’ll ever need in the on-line finishing suite.

Deliverables
eQ turns deliverables into a profitable business. Quantel’s unique Resolution Co-existence technology means that eQ can version from one format to another in realtime, without rendering or filling the workspace with different copies of the same clip. Just press play. For example, HD masters can be played out in 625/50 or 525/60 in anamorphic 16:9, letterbox or center-cropped. Everything is handled automatically; all you need to do is simply choose the destination format and press Play! It’s even possible to pan and scan in realtime as part of the playout.

Full-on audio
eQ includes the full range of audio facilities required in the finishing suite. Audio handling is AES/EBU 48kHz, with 8 channel i/o and mono, stereo or quad tracks with channel mapping. Realtime audio equalization and compression can be carried out directly from the timeline. eQ supports AIFF, AAF, BWAV, CD ripping, project export to Pro-Tools and even has a voice over function.

Titling
eQ covers practically every conceivable titling and text requirement. For creative, text-based graphics, the built-in Paintbox offers hundreds of vector-based fonts, all of which can be given the full graphics treatment.
The built-in QScribe facility is perfect for credits and titles. It includes the full array of rolls, crawls and other title animation tools to bring titles to life. In addition, there are a number of popular titling plug-ins available.
eQ’s QScribe module also includes a sophisticated caption compositor, enabling automatic subtitling. In addition, Screen Subtitling Systems software is also available as an integrated plug-in.

Flexible i/o
eQ excels at network and video i/o. Frame accurate VTR control at HD or SD is a given and eQ can even emulate a VTR for RS422 control from external devices such as telecines or color correctors. Network i/o is background and eQ can resize clips on-the-fly for output. QXML lets other devices work with material in eQ’s workspace. The powerful eQ architecture enables it to support new formats as they emerge; eQ already handles HDCAMSR, Viper and the Arri Tornado.

1000fps HD from Arri Media and eQ

Data archive

Overcome the restrictions of video by archiving as data to preserve all the original project information. Archiving becomes a background task via the network and doesn’t interrupt the suite’s operation. Archive to network or to a local DTF2, LTO2 or SAIT data recorder.

Massive Workspace
eQ’s Workspace options start at 160 minutes of HD – that’s over 13 hours of SD! Quantel’s FrameMagic™ disk management makes sure that every minute of disk space is always available without you needing to waste time defragmenting disks or consolidating material. For those that need more Workspace eQ can support up to 18 hours of HD (1920×1080 10 bit 4:2:2 24 fps).

Hardware RAID Workspace
Protecting your work is essential and eQ comes with RAID disk protection meaning you can continue to work even if a disk doesn’t. The system will automatically rebuild the data from the failed disk onto a new replacement.

Quantel Technology

Quantel products deliver unrivalled performance, quality and workflow. That’s because they take advantage of purpose-built Quantel technology designed from the ground up to meet the demanding needs of Post and Broadcast. We’re proud that our technology has won many awards including 9 of the prestigious technical Emmys. We are even more proud that our customers rely on our unique developments every day right across the film and TV business.

Click on the links below for details of some of the unique technology innovations that put Quantel products in a class apart.

Frame Magic
An apparently simple and totally logical concept, Frame Magic is nonetheless unique to Quantel sQ servers – as behind the simplicity is powerful broadcast technology that eliminates cost and complexity from integrated production systems. Unlike conventional servers, the Quantel sQ server treats every frame in the store as an entity in its own right, rather than as part of a larger file.

At its simplest level, Frame Magic means that when an edit is made between two clips of video, this is held merely as an instruction set in the sQ server to read the selected frames from each clip out of the store in the new edit order. Even if the source clips are deleted, the edit can still be played. Because Frame Magic looks after every frame as an individual, only the unused frames are actually removed from the store. Now imagine a newsroom with say 20 journalists and editors working simultaneously. If each is using different sections of the original source clips and one of these is inappropriately deleted without Frame Magic, 20 stories would be lost. This is a nightmare scenario for broadcasters considering entering the server-based news production arena, which Quantel has totally eliminated.

Additionally, Frame Magic eliminates the cost and complexity of the management layer that would otherwise be required to prevent such accidents happening; furthermore, there is no need with Frame Magic to hold onto unused material as ‘accident insurance’, which radically reduces the amount of useful storage in the server. Frame Magic is a win-win technology – reducing costs and complexity, increasing performance and security. Click here to view a Flash presentation on the benefits of this unique technology.

Zone Magic
Zone Magic enables local and remote media sharing and production that is secure, flexible and highly network efficient. Only possible thanks to the unique Frame Magic technology inherent in Quantel systems and their built-in AAF support, Zone Magic introduces a genuine federated workflow that can span a room, a department, a building, a city, a country or the entire world, bringing massive operational and commercial benefits to broadcasters.

At a local level, a single organisation may be servicing the differing needs of several broadcast channels of its own such as news, sports, online, radio etc, and increasingly frequently, third party needs too – for example, as a contracted news supplier to another broadcaster. Some material will be shared, and some ‘private’ to an individual channel. Zone Magic’s federated workflow allows the organisation to simply and securely specify precisely which users have access to shared material on various servers, and which have exclusive access to material that is private to an individual channel.

At a regional or national level, Zone Magic provides a brilliant bridge for a broadcaster with several locations. All regions can browse the contents of the others’ sQ systems and if they desire, edit it remotely to suit their own regional storyline at browse resolution. Only the finished piece is then pulled over the network at broadcast resolution. This also multiplies the available talent pool to effectively include everyone operating a connected system, no matter where they are located.

At a global level, a remote broadcast truck at an international sports event may be editing its own material on its on-board Quantel sQ system but will also want to pull on central resources for archive, interviews etc. Zone Magic allows the remote truck editor to browse, choose and edit material held on the headquarters sQ system in browse resolution and pull in the just the finished piece at full resolution – optimising network efficiency.

ISA

One of the major reasons for the cost and complexity of many server-based news systems is the need to manage the contents of several separate servers simultaneously. Where one or more of these is a browse server looking after journalist desktop editing, the problems multiply further. We believe Quantel’s sQ news systems are unique in eliminating these problems, which not only provides more reliable service for the broadcaster under pressure, but also removes a major cost from the system – one of the reasons why sQ for News systems typically have a significantly lower overall cost than competing systems.

The technology that enables this is Quantel’s Integrated Server Architecture (ISA). This operates at two levels within the sQ News system. Firstly, the sQ server stores browse material alongside the full resolution video on its internal disks. This is only possible because sQ is a bi-lingual IT (browse) and broadcast (full resolution) server. Browse and full quality material are locked together under a single ISA database. Other systems utilise a parallel database (usually with the browse material held on a separate server from the full quality video) which attempts to track changes in one and relate them to the other. The Quantel ISA approach simply eliminates this potential problem (and cost) at source.

Secondly, when a larger sQ News system is assembled using several sQ servers, ISA continues to treat all the material held as if it were on a single server. Effectively it is – a single database locks them all together. Other systems require separate management for each server, in turn brought together under a larger database – once again adding a high level of complexity and cost which the Quantel ISA approach eliminates at source.
Resolution Co-existence
Resolution Coexistence™ opens up many new workflow possibilities. Material of any resolution, colour space and bit depth can be loaded without the need to re-start or partition the disk. Different material can then be combined in the same project and on the same timeline instantly saving time, disk space and delivering higher quality results. See a demo of this unique technology by clicking here.

Dynamic Rounding
Dynamic Rounding is a clever technique devised by Quantel for truncating the word length of pixels – a process you can’t avoid when you are processing images. Rather than simply losing the lower bits, Dynamic Rounding uses their information to control, via a randomiser, the dither of the LSB of the truncated result. This effectively removes any artefacts that would otherwise be visible. Dynamic rounding is non-cumulative on any number of passes and produces statistically correct results. Dynamic rounding eliminates any truncation artefacts leaving you great looking pictures whatever the bit depth, whatever the processing. Dynamic Rounding is patented technology that you simply can’t get anywhere else.
